Everything You Need to Know About the DVLA Check Code for Vehicle Hire

Abacus Vehicle Hire explains why the Driving Licence Check Code is essential — and how to get yours quickly.

When hiring a vehicle in the UK, especially vans, trucks, or minibuses, one important step you might not expect is providing a DVLA Check Code, also known as a Driving Licence Check Code.

At Abacus Vehicle Hire, we’re committed to making the rental process as easy and smooth as possible — and that means helping you understand what this code is, why it’s required, and how to get it.

What Is a DVLA Check Code?

A DVLA Check Code is a temporary, secure code issued by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). It allows a vehicle hire company like us to view certain details from your driving licence, such as:

  • The types of vehicles you’re allowed to drive
  • Any penalty points or disqualifications
  • The validity of your driving licence

The code replaces the old-style paper counterpart that used to accompany the plastic photocard licence and is valid for 21 days.

Why Does Abacus Vehicle Hire Need It?

Whether you're hiring a car, van, minibus, or motorhome from us, we need to confirm that you're legally allowed to drive the type of vehicle you're booking.

The Driving Licence Check Code is a quick, secure way for us to do this — and it protects both you and us.

At Abacus Vehicle Hire, your safety is our top priority. This check is part of our responsible hiring process and ensures you're fully covered by insurance for the duration of your hire.

How to Get Your DVLA Check Code

It’s fast and free to get your code online. Here’s how:

  1. Go to the DVLA’s official website: www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence
  2. Log in using your:
    • Driving licence number
    • National Insurance number
    • Postcode
  3. Click on ‘Share your licence information’
  4. Generate your check code
  5. Send the code to Abacus Vehicle Hire at the time of booking or when requested

Tip: The code is only valid for 21 days and can only be used once — so don’t generate it too early!

When Should I Provide a DVLA Check Code?

You’ll typically be asked to provide your DVLA Check Code:

  • When booking your vehicle online
  • When confirming your hire details via email or phone
  • At the time of collection (if not already provided)

For a smooth handover, we recommend generating your code 24–48 hours before collection.

Whether you're booking a small car for a weekend trip or a large commercial van for business use, we aim to make the hire process seamless. Understanding and providing your Driving Licence Check Code ensures there are no delays when you arrive to collect your vehicle.
